Assam speaker to hear disqualification petition of Sherman Ali Ahmed on Oct 25

Guwahati, Oct 9:
The Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker, Biswajit Daimaru, will hear the petition filed by the Congress party seeking the disqualification of suspended Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed on October 25 at 12:30 PM.

This development was confirmed by the Assembly Secretary, D. Pegu, who has also requested the Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, to attend the hearing and defend the petition.

The Congress party sought the disqualification of Sherman Ali Ahmed on May 3, 2024, submitting a 167-page complaint to the Assembly. The complaint alleges that Ahmed, who represents the Baghbar constituency, was directly campaigning against the party’s candidate in the Lok Sabha elections.

This is the second time the Congress party has approached Speaker Biswajit Daimary with a formal application seeking the disqualification of suspended MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed. Earlier, on April 26, 2022, Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition, had also submitted a similar request for Ahmed’s disqualification due to his alleged anti-party activities.

Ahmed was initially suspended from the party in October 2021 for repeatedly violating party discipline. On September 24, the Gauhati High Court sought a response from the Speaker on a petition filed by Congress MP Rakibul Hussain regarding Ahmed’s disqualification. While issuing the order, Justice Devassish Baruah, presiding over a single bench, issued notices to four respondents: the Speaker, Principal Secretary of the Assembly, Secretary of the Assembly, and Sherman Ali Ahmed. The case remains under review before the court.
