Memo to Vice-President

No salary hike for SSA teachers for 8 years

Shillong, Oct 17: There has been no hike in the salary of teachers working under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in the state for the past eight years, the SSA teachers stated in a memorandum to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who visited Shillong on Wednesday.

“It has been eight long years since our salary has been enhanced,” stated the memorandum from All Meghalaya SSA School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA), teachers under whose banner have been on strike for 16 days demanding 100% salary hike.

“Since the introduction of SSA in Meghalaya, the teachers’ salary was usually increased every two to four years. However, there has been no enhancement since 2017 till September 2024,” said AMSSASTA president Peter Thyrniang in the letter seeking the Vice-President’s intervention into the matter.

Despite several memoranda submitted to the government since 2019, there has been no response from the latter till date, the AMSSASTA stated.

In 2008, the SSA teachers got a 100% hike in salary from ₹1,500 to ₹3,000, and over 100% increase in 2010 from ₹3,000 to Rs 6,200. After three years in 2013, LP and UP teachers’ salary was enhanced to ₹9,200 (53.3%) and ₹9,900 (65%) respectively. In 2016, UP teachers’ salary was raised to ₹19,044 (107%) and LP teachers to ₹20,493, according to the association.

The SSA teachers also drew the Vice-President’s attention to their other demand – regularisation of service, while pushing the demand for a 100% salary hike as their primary agenda.
