Gambegre polls draw leaders out of Shillong

Tura, Nov 6: From roads like flight tarmacs in Shillong to the pothole and dusty village paths of Gambegre, political leaders are being drawn to this region in droves, given the high stakes in this bye-election.

Two seniormost leaders of political parties in the state- NPP’s W R Kharlukhi and Congress state president Vincent Pala, have landed in Gambegre to woo voters to their respective sides, in what is being termed a crucial battle that can turn either way.

The former NPP president and current Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya, W R Kharlukhi, was at Gambegre this week to meet with voters.

“This election is about ensuring development. We need to continue the momentum of development that is taking place all over our state and the only way forward is to ensure a win for our candidate Mehtab Chandee A Sangma, because our government is proactive in bringing development to all areas, including Gambegre,” said Kharlukhi as he made attempts to mobilize voters towards the ruling side.

The NPP is optimistic of victory at the polls as the chief minister Conrad K Sangma leads from the front, pushing the agenda of development in Gambegre, something that has been missing for years in the region.

The Congress is also going all out to try and snatch victory. Its state chief Vincent Pala held an election rally in Gambegre where he spoke about the qualities of Congress and how it has held on to Gambegre despite stiff opposition in the last election.

“People of Gambegre voted in the Congress in 2023 assembly elections, voted in our MP in this 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and we are optimistic we will also win this bye-election, ” an upbeat Vincent Pala said.
