MHRC judicial member’s term extended

Shillong, Dec 4: The term of Baffindalyne Giri, judicial member of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC), has been extended by another three years, following expiry of her tenure more than a month ago.

Her five-year term ended on October 17, but the extension was delayed as the MHRC selection committee could not hold a meeting owing to ill health of deputy chief minister and committee member Prestone Tynsong, who is another member of the committee.

“The MHRC meeting had to deliberate on the judicial member’s post. We currently have Smt Giri, who has completed her initial five-year term. Considering the age limit of 70 years and her present age of 67, the committee headed by the chief secretary has recommended extending her term for another three years,” said chief minister Conrad Sangma, who chaired the meeting on Wednesday.

Since expiry of Giri’s term, MHRC had been unable to conduct meetings or hear cases due to lack of quorum.

The MHRC requires a quorum of two of its three members, including the chairperson, to make decisions.
