Khasi-Jaintia Hills ADC elections on Feb 21

Shillong, Dec 17: Meghalaya is set to be gripped by election fever in the coming weeks as the state government has announced elections to autonomous district councils (ADCs) in Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills on February 21 next year.

Twenty-nine seats each in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will be up for contest while one seat each is reserved for nomination by the governor.

The governor approved the cabinet’s recommendation based on a proposal of District Council Affairs (DCA) department for holding of elections to the two ADCs, said deputy chief minister in-charge DCA, Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday.

The notification for the ADC elections will be issued on January 27 while the last date of filing of nominations will be February 3, the same day when nominations will be scrutinised as well. The last date of withdrawal of nominations is on February 4.

“The date of polling will be held on February 21 and the results will be declared on February 24,” Tynsong said.

The draft electoral rolls will be published on January 13 with last date of filing of claims and objections scheduled on January 22. The claims and objections will be disposed of by January 24 and final electoral rolls will be published on January 27.

The model code of conduct will be effective from the date of publication of the election notification, which is on January 27.

“MCC will come into force immediately from January 27 in the districts falling under the jurisdiction of KHADC and JHADC,” Tynsong said.

The expenses to be borne for holding elections to the ADCs, Tynsong said, will be deducted from the shares payable to KHADC and JHADC.
