Tobacco sale, consumption banned in govt and private offices in Kamrup

Guwahati, Dec 18: In a bid to promote public health and maintain a clean working environment, Kamrup district has implemented a strict ban on the sale and consumption of tobacco in all government and private establishments.

The order was issued by District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra. The directive prohibits the use or consumption of any form of tobacco—whether smoking, chewing, or spitting—within the internal and external premises of all offices in the district.

The ban applies to employees, officials, visitors, contractors, and any individual present within the premises. “All government and private offices must display visible ‘No Tobacco Zone’ signboards at key entry points, including entrances, corridors, and common areas,” stated the DC.

The signage must include the name, designation, and contact number of the officer responsible for enforcing the order. According to the directive, individuals found smoking or chewing tobacco within office premises will face a fine of ₹200. Spitting tobacco within office premises will incur a penalty of ₹500.

The order further specifies that the Head of Department (HoD) or the designated officer in charge of the premises will be held accountable for enforcement failures and subject to the same penalties.

The sale of tobacco products is strictly prohibited within a 100-yard radius of any government or private office, including campuses. Shops or vendors found violating this rule will face immediate closure and legal action under applicable laws.

Heads of departments and responsible officers of private establishments have been instructed to ensure full compliance with the ban. Regular inspections will be conducted to monitor adherence. The DC warned that any failure to comply with the directive will result in severe disciplinary action against the concerned authorities.
