Guwahati, Dec 26: Former MP and AIUDF president Maulana Badruddin Ajmal has expressed deep concern over the recent surge in attacks on Hindus and their religious sites in Bangladesh. Since the establishment of the interim government led by Chief Advisor Md Yunus, reports of violence against the Hindu minority have intensified, raising alarm over the state of religious freedom in the country.
In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, Ajmal highlighted the troubling rise in violence and discrimination faced by Hindu communities in Bangladesh. He stated, “As you are aware, Bangladesh has historically been home to a diverse range of communities, including a significant Hindu minority.
However, recent reports indicate a disturbing rise in violence and discrimination against these communities. This situation not only undermines the fabric of a peaceful society but also poses a threat to the fundamental principles of justice and equality.”
Ajmal emphasized India’s moral and diplomatic responsibility as the world’s largest democracy and Bangladesh’s immediate neighbour to advocate for the safety and rights of minorities in Bangladesh.
Ajmal called for urgent action to ensure the safety of Bangladesh’s Hindu population and the preservation of their religious freedoms. He stressed the importance of India using its global influence to urge Bangladesh to adopt measures for the protection of minority rights. He encouraged fostering international dialogue to promote coexistence and respect among all communities.
Ajmal called for accountability for the perpetrators of violence and urged the Bangladesh government to protect the lives, properties, and religious sites of minority groups. The AIUDF supremo suggested that India bring the issue to international platforms, using its standing to highlight the need for collective action to support religious freedom and minority protection.
Ajmal urged President Murmu to take the matter seriously and direct the Indian government to actively engage with Bangladeshi authorities. He called for India to advocate for urgent reforms in Bangladesh that would ensure the safety of Hindus and other religious minorities and hold perpetrators of violence accountable. “India must pressure Bangladesh to correct its course and strive toward a harmonious society where all individuals, regardless of their faith, can live without fear and with dignity,” Ajmal concluded.
