13 coal miners trapped in Assam’s Umrangso mine, rescue operations await confirmation

Guwahati, Jan 6: Thirteen coal miners have reportedly been stranded in a flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district since 7 am on Monday. The incident occurred at coal mine No. 19 in Tin Kilo under Umrangso police station, according to local sources.

Local sources claim that 27 miners were initially trapped in the mine early morning, but 10 managed to escape. Between 13 to 17 miners are still unaccounted for
While there has been no official confirmation yet, a district Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) official acknowledged receiving information about the incident.

“We have been informed about labourers being trapped in the mine, but the report is yet to be verified. Our Deputy Commissioner (DC) is visiting the site, and if confirmed, rescue operations will be launched immediately,” the official stated.

The mine reportedly lacked safety barricades, as revealed by video footage shared with authorities. Concerns have also been raised about the illegal operation of the mine, allegedly under the protection of local politicians and police, with no precautionary measures in place.

One distressed family member, whose son-in-law is reportedly trapped, shared their anguish. “I came here after hearing from my daughter that her husband is trapped in the mine. I do not know how many people are trapped, but I know he is among them,” they said.

The absence of proper safety measures and the illegal nature of the mining operation have added to the gravity of the situation. Authorities are under pressure to act swiftly as public concern grows.
