State gears up for sixth Meghalaya Games

Shillong, Jan 11: With the sixth Meghalaya Games round the corner, organisers and authorities concerned have geared up preparation for the various sports venues most of which are in West Jaintia Hills district.

While some the venues are ready for the Games, some are nearing completion.

During the Games from January 20 to 25, altogether 29 sports disciplines will be played with two events due to take place in Shillong.

The swimming event will take place in Caroline Swimming Pool, Shillong and Golf at Assam Rifles Golf Course, Laitkor.

Meanwhile, organisers in West Jaintia Hills district are making all efforts to ensure all logistics and facilities in place for smooth execution of the event.

The other competitions – Archery, Arm Wrestling, Athletic, Badminton, BasketBall Boxing, Cycling, Football, Gymnastic, Judo, Karate-Do, Kho-Kho, Muay Thai, Shooting, Softball, sports climbing, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Lawn Tennis, Volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, wushu, Traditional sports, Roll Ball, Yogasana and Lawn bowl – will take place in different localities of Jowai town, Wahiajer and Khliehtryshi in West Jaintia Hills.

There are 3,899 athletes who have registered as participants for the Games.

The curtain raiser for 6th Meghalaya Games will take place on January 13 at 1 pm at District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai.

Sports and youth affairs minister Shakliar Warjri and local MLA and MUDA chairman Wailadmiki Shylla will attend the programme among others.
