Govt, bar association discuss empanelment of advocates

Shillong, Nov 3: Following an observation of the Meghalaya High Court, the issue of empanelment of government advocates was discussed in a meeting between the state government and the Bar Association on Tuesday.

The meeting chaired by Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui sought to find a way forward on the guidelines for empanelment of government advocates.

It was also attended by members of the Bar Association, the Advocate General, Commissioner Secretary Law and Joint Secretary Law.

A PIL before the High Court challenges the guidelines issued by the government for empanelment of government advocates in different courts in the state and the country.

Rymbui said the High Court had suggested that all stakeholders sit together to resolve the issue.

He said both sides placed their views at the meeting.

According to him, the Bar Association will now submit in detail the areas where the existing guidelines need improvement.

“We will sit again after getting the points which need to be improved,” Rymbui said.
