Govt warns teachers against use of proxy

‘If you applied to become a teacher, be a teacher’

Shillong, Feb 11: Education minister Rakkam A Sangma has issued a stern warning against teachers on whose behalf proxy teachers are working in government schools.

“If you applied to become a teacher, be a teacher,” Sangma said on Monday while assuring of strong action in case of such complaints about “appointing” proxy teachers.

The government will also issue a strong warning to the heads of institutions in this regard, he said.

They will be held accountable if found guilty of allowing proxy teacher in respective institutions, the minister said.

Installation of the Teachers Information Management System (TIMS) is expected to regulate functioning of proxy teachers in government schools.

However, Sangma said, many schools have appointed additional teachers at their own expense to address shortage of teachers.

“But you don’t appoint somebody in your place, that is wrong,” he stated.

Appealing to teachers not to indulge in such illegal practices, the minister said, “If you have some urgency, you can ask for proper leave… this is my request.”
