Regular appointments in MeECL hit finance hurdle

Shillong, Mar 20: Resumption of regular appointments in vacant posts in Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) depends on its financial position, said power minister Abu Taher Mondal on Wednesday.

Admitting MeECL going through financial distress, the minister assured of conducting regular appointments for the vacant posts.

“As of now we are having a lot of financial problem… we are not going ahead immediately… recently we advertised some posts… regular appointments will be done as and when MeECL is financially sound…,” Mondal told a delegation of Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP).

The FKJGP has demanded immediate recruitment against the vacant posts in Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL), a subsidiary of the state-owned MeECL.

Attributing “many reasons” for the posts lying vacant for a “very long time” at MeECL, he said the government frequently conducts review of all departments to explore possibilities of providing employment opportunities to the youth.

The MeECL had advertised for 57 field engineers (Electrical and Mechanical) and 10 field engineers (Civil), 54 field supervisors (Electrical and Mechanical), and 10 field supervisors (Civil), summing up to 67 field engineers and 64 field supervisors, Mondal said.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, FKJGP president Dundee C Khongsit said MePDCL had 130 sanctioned posts of assistant executive engineer (AEE)/assistant engineer (AE) and 125 sanctioned posts of junior engineer (JE) in the Electrical/ Mechanical cadres and sub cadres (Electronics and Computer Engineers).

He said the numbers were derived from restructuring of MePDCL 2023 issue vide Office Order on July 12, 2023, which still remain vacant in the MePDCL.

Alleging slow process of recruitment for MePDCL technical staff, he said the department has deprived thousands of qualified unemployed youth of their job opportunities.

The FKJGP has sought the Power department to immediately intervene in the matter, he said.
