Guwahati, March 29: The United Khasi People’s Organisation (UKPO) Karbi Anglong Central Committee has issued a strong appeal for peace and unity between the Khasi and Karbi communities in the wake of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s statement that Blocks I and II fall under Karbi Anglong district, Assam. The organization is urging both communities to prioritize harmony, progress, and the prevention of further border tensions.
During the CM Connect programme in Bhoirymbong, Ri-Bhoi district, Conrad Sangma reaffirmed that Blocks I and II are part of Assam, a declaration that has sparked concerns among Khasi residents of Karbi Anglong. However, UKPO president Pynshngainlang Rattane has emphasized the importance of staying united and working towards collective progress rather than allowing historical border disputes to fuel unrest.
“We must not let the past repeat itself,” said Rattane, referencing tragic incidents like the Mukroh tragedy and the Khanduli border unrest of 2024. These conflicts left communities isolated, essential supplies disrupted, and innocent lives lost. He reminded both Khasi and Karbi people that they have shared the land for generations and must honor their historical bonds rather than let political boundaries divide them.
While political debates continue in Shillong and Diphu, Rattane pointed out that it is the Khasi, Karbi, and other indigenous people living in the border areas who suffer the most from territorial disputes. These communities face road closures, restricted movement, economic instability, and fear of violence.
“The real victims of border disputes are not the people in the cities; they are the families living on the frontline, struggling for stability,” he said.
The UKPO president urged both communities to strengthen their relationship based on the traditions of their ancestors. He cited the historic ‘Kove Baida’ ceremony in Khang Khadwiu, which symbolized an oath of peace and cooperation between the Khasi-Pnar and Karbi peoples.
“Politics will come and go, but the Khasi and Karbi people will always be here. It is our responsibility to uphold the promise of peace that our ancestors made,” he added.
UKPO has appealed to the Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam, as well as the CEMs of KHADC and JHADC, to support peaceful coexistence and development initiatives for Khasi residents in Karbi Anglong. With an estimated 25,000 Khasi people residing in nine constituencies of Karbi Anglong, UKPO is advocating for stronger electoral rights, economic support, and cultural recognition for the community.
By working together, respecting each other’s heritage, and focusing on development rather than division, UKPO believes that the Khasi and Karbi people can ensure a future of peace and prosperity for all.
