Ex-Manipur CM draws NPP flak over remark on PA Sangma

Shillong, Apr 2: National People’s Party (NPP) leader and cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak has demanded an apology from former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh for accusing the party founder late Purno A Sangma of advocating for North East be “divided into smaller states on ethnic lines”.

“I totally condemn this on behalf of NPP Garo Hills and I seek an apology from N Biren Singh,” Marak told reporters on Tuesday.

Marak accused N Biren Singh of creating a “mess in Manipur” and that “now he is putting a blame on PA Sangma, who is no longer with us in this world.”

The former chief minister had accused Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma of interfering in Manipur’s internal affairs.

In his social media post, he also did not spare the NPP founder, saying, “Late PA Sangma once advocated for dividing the North East into smaller states along ethnic lines, a dangerous idea that threatened the unity of our nation today. We are seeing similar attempts to interfere in Manipur’s internal affairs to destabilise the state”.

Challenging this, the Marcuise Marak termed PA Sangma a “leader of integrity” and that he had been a national leader, who has worked for the people of North East.

“His principle is to unite everyone and not to divide each one of us,” Marak added.
