Dy CM asks Chief Secy to take up Langpih issue with Assam
Shillong, Sept 10: The state government has assured to intervene, if Chief Secretary-level discussions cannot resolve the issue of alleged coercion of villagers in Langpih area of West Khasi Hills to enrol in Census by Assam officials.
“I have already asked our Chief Secretary to take it up with his Assam counterpart as is usually done. In case the issue is beyond the control of these two senior officers, we will step in,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong told reporters on Wednesday.
Earlier, he met a delegation that alleged harassment and forced Census enrolment of Khasi villagers living along the disputed inter-state border in West Khasi Hills.
Assuring to take the matter at higher level if necessary, he said, “The next level will be Minister to Minister, and then Chief Minister to Chief Minister level. I have already instructed. I understand the actual problem faced by our people on the Langpih side.”
On the delegation’s demand for a temporary police camp or outpost to ensure security of villagers, Tynsong said the government will examine the proposal.
“They have requested for a temporary camp or temporary outpost. We will examine that. We already have two BOPs, one at Langpih and another a little beyond Langpih. I have asked the Chief Secretary and the DGP to take care of that,” he added.
