Shillong, Apr 19: Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland, S Phangnon Konyak, has been nominated as member to the Court of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
She was nominated to the position by Vice-President of India and Chairman of Rajya Sabha with effect from 25 April 15, as per a communication from Rajya Sabha Secretariat.
“Established on 19 July 1973 through an Act of Parliament, NEHU has long stood as a premier institution of higher education in India’s North East. Its jurisdiction initially extended to the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland, along with the then Union Territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram,” the Rajya Sabha statement said.

Over the decades, NEHU has played a transformative role in shaping the intellectual and administrative fabric of the region. The University has nurtured generations of academicians, bureaucrats, public leaders, and change-makers, contributing significantly to the nation’s development,” it said.
Meanwhile, the state BJP hailed Konyak’s appointment as a moment of great pride and honour.
The party said Konyak’s nomination reflects her dedication to public service and deep engagement with educational and developmental aspirations of the North East.
“Her association with NEHU resonates strongly with the University’s motto: ‘Rise Up and Build’,” the BJP said.
This appointment is expected to further enhance the institution’s linkages with the people of the region and support its ongoing pursuit of academic excellence and inclusive progress, it added.
