Guwahati, May 7: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah on Wednesday accused two BJP leaders of openly inciting violence against opposition members. He alleged that Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah and Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu publicly urged their supporters to attack—and even kill—opposition leaders and workers.

According to Borah, the inflammatory remarks were made on May 2 at Sangam Rangamanch in Jonai, where both leaders allegedly called upon supporters to target Congress workers. “This statement is not only unconstitutional but a direct challenge to Indian democracy,” Borah said in a strongly worded statement.

Borah has appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take immediate legal action against the BJP MP and MLA. “Despite their statements going viral, the police have not registered any case against them,” he pointed out, expressing concern over the inaction of law enforcement agencies.

He also urged Assam DGP Harmeet Singh to initiate a formal investigation into the matter. Borah added that this is not an isolated incident. “Several Congress leaders and workers have been attacked in recent times by miscreants allegedly backed by the BJP, and yet no police action has been taken,” he said.

Highlighting a recent case, Borah said that Dibyajyoti Kutum, a Congress worker attacked by a group on May 2, later died of his injuries at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh on May 4. “No investigation has been launched into his death either,” Borah said, calling the silence of the authorities disturbing.

He concluded by urging elected representatives to uphold democratic values and treat people fairly, not with political bias.
