Shillong, May 31: Large areas of Meghalaya on Friday were left without power as severe weather conditions, including strong winds and landslides, downed electrical lines and power poles.

The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), tasked with providing electricity to the state, had its restoration teams out on the field working round the clock to get electricity back on line.

“We deeply appreciate the public’s cooperation during this period and assure that every effort is being made to fully normalize the power supply at the earliest,” stated Sanjay Goyal, Chairman cum Managing Director of MeECL.

Incessant rains accompanied by strong winds caused disruptions across many regions of the state with the hardest hit being Shillong, Jaintia Hills, and Ri Bhoi districts, where several high-voltage transmission lines and distribution feeders sustained damage.

Preliminary reports indicate that over 900 km of 33kV lines and more than 12,000 km of LT lines were affected, alongside crucial 132kV transmission lines.

MeECL field teams have been deployed to assess damage, replace faulty infrastructure, and restore supply as swiftly as possible. Efforts have been prioritized for essential services such as hospitals and water supply systems.

By early Friday evening, around 50% of the impacted areas had its lines restored while work continues at a rapid pace despite challenging terrain and ongoing adverse weather conditions.

Residents have been urged to remain patient as restoration is being undertaken on a war footing, with additional manpower and materials mobilized to expedite the process.
