Guwahati, June 6: The Assam Congress on Friday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, branding him the “weakest and most corrupt Chief Minister in the country” for his failure to secure adequate flood relief from the Centre. The remarks were made by AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh following a high-level Political Affairs Committee meeting of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) held at Rajiv Bhawan, Guwahati on Friday.
Singh criticized the BJP’s “double-engine government” for providing only ₹50 crore in flood relief despite damages exceeding ₹5,000 crore, accusing the Chief Minister of failing to pressure the Centre for funds.
“Sarma boasts about strong Centre-state ties, yet he can’t bring sufficient support to a flood-ravaged Assam. He has bowed before the Centre to protect his power,” Singh said.

He also called out the BJP for failing to fulfil its promise of a “flood-free Assam,” citing a decade of inaction despite bold claims in its election manifestos.
GAPCC president Gaurav Gogoi further demanded that floods and river erosion in Assam be declared national problems, criticizing the central government’s repeated neglect.
“Before Prime Minister Modi visits Assam, we demand the immediate release of all pending flood relief,” Gogoi said.
The meeting passed several key resolutions, including a decision to contest the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) elections with full force, and condemned the BJP’s “politics of hate” in the lead-up to polls.
The Congress also aimed at the BJP government’s alleged corruption, including financial irregularities tied to the CM’s family, syndicate raj, rising state debt, selective beneficiary schemes and the failure to implement the Assam Accord, and misuse of the NRC for political gain.
The meeting strongly condemned the alleged illegal deportation drive, where Indian citizens were falsely labelled as Bangladeshis and left at the border in violation of human rights.
“This is unconstitutional, inhumane, and communal. The BJP is playing with people’s lives to polarize voters,” Congress leaders stated.
They reiterated that no foreigner should stay illegally in Assam, but emphasized that Indian citizens must not be harassed in the name of deportation.
The meeting also discussed the Congress party’s roadmap to make Assam self-reliant, focusing on agriculture, dairy, fisheries, poultry, and tourism.
Condolences were offered for the death of four-time MLA Sukur Ali Ahmed, and a moment of silence was held for recent flood victims.
Notable attendees included senior Congress leaders Bhupen Bora, Debabrata Saikia, Rakibul Hussain, Ripun Bora, Abdul Khaleque, and others, alongside AICC secretaries Prithviraj Sathe, Manoj Chauhan, and Vikas Upadhyay.
