IIRF University Rankings: NEHU ranks 29th among 51 central universities

“We are happy to be ranked among the top 30 central universities in the country. However, we are aware that there is significant room for improvement”

-Prof PS Shukla, Vice-Chancellor, NEHU

Shillong, June 14: Among 51 central universities in India, the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong has been ranked 29th in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) University Rankings 2025. The university achieved a total overall index score of 932.91.

The ranking is significant given the prolonged tussle between NEHU management, especially vice-chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla and teachers’ and students’ organsiations, even prompting inquiry from the Central government and demand for intervention from the state government.

Prof Shukla, meanwhile, has expressed satisfaction over NEHU’s performance in IIRF University Rankings released on Friday.

Based on multiple factors such as the quality of teaching, research output, industry collaboration, infrastructure, and student outcomes, IIRF ranking is among the most respected higher education rankings in India, according to an official release.

This year, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Delhi, and Jamia Millia Islamia are among the top-ranked institutions. These universities lead in teaching standards, learning resources, research, and industry partnerships.

“We are happy to be ranked among the top 30 central universities in the country. However, we are aware that there is significant room for improvement,” the NEHU VC said.

“Our university is on a journey of transformation, and this ranking reflects both our achievements and the work that still lies ahead,” he added.

Prof Shukla also said NEHU is committed to strengthening its research culture, enhancing student support systems, and improving its academic and administrative processes to deliver better outcomes in the coming years.

He noted that the position of NEHU in IIRF ranking highlights its role as a key academic and research institution in the North Eastern region.

Higher education rankings like those published by IIRF are crucial in shaping the future of Indian universities.
