Guwahati, June 19: The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) on Thursday staged statewide protests against the recent eviction drives in Goalpara and Dhubri districts, demanding immediate rehabilitation for families displaced from forest land.
Protests were held in front of deputy commissioners’ offices across all district headquarters, where AAMSU submitted memoranda addressed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling the evictions unjust and inhumane.
In its memorandum, AAMSU condemned what it described as the “brutal and inhumane” eviction of landless citizens from their homesteads without any resettlement plan. The student body specifically cited eviction drives in Hasilabil (Goalpara), Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, and other regions where, according to the organisation, families have been forced to live “a beastly life” without basic amenities.
“The eviction of poor, landless families without ensuring alternative settlement is against the values of a welfare state. The administration’s action is not only ruthless but fundamentally unjust,” the memorandum stated.

AAMSU general secretary Minnatul Islam, speaking during a protest in Kamrup district, clarified the organisation’s position. “We are not against eviction, but people must be rehabilitated first. Evicting people without providing them a place to go is inhumane,” he said.
He also alleged that the government’s eviction policy unfairly targets religious minorities, particularly Muslims. “This is not governance. This is harassment,” he added.
In Nagaon, the Sachetan Nagarik Manch extended support to AAMSU’s protest, echoing the demand for proper rehabilitation of evicted families. The Nagaon unit of AAMSU submitted its memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Co-District Commissioner in Kaliabor.
Several AAMSU leaders participated in and addressed the protests across the state, including Musaraf Hussain Kabir and Abdur Rahim (Vice Presidents), Jahirul Islam (Publicity Secretary), Abdul Nur (President, Nagaon AAMSU), Saddam Hussain (General Secretary, Nagaon AAMSU), and Ikramul Huda, president of Sachetan Nagarik Manch.
The protestors called for an immediate halt to evictions until a concrete rehabilitation plan is in place, and warned of intensified statewide agitation if the government fails to respond.
