ONGC races against rain to contain Bhatiapar gas blowout, moves closer to final capping

Guwahati, June 23: As the gas blowout at Bhatiapar’s well number RDS#147A entered its 12th day on Monday, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) reported steady progress in its well control operations, despite relentless rainfall and worsening ground conditions.

A critical breakthrough came with the arrival of an extra-long boom crane from Guwahati on Monday evening. The crane is essential for removing stacked tubings from the rig derrick — a necessary step before the final capping of the well can take place. ONGC officials called the crane’s deployment a major advancement in their response efforts.

Heavy rain has created a slushy and hazardous work environment, but ONGC’s Regional Crisis Management Team (RCMT), working in coordination with global experts from Cudd Pressure Control, has continued operations without interruption. Teams are working around the clock to clear remaining rig equipment and maintain safety protocols at the high-pressure gas site.

Flooding in the area has added new challenges, particularly in keeping the RCMT pump functional. However, officials noted a key development: gas pressure at the well has dropped significantly—an encouraging indicator that the situation is stabilizing and moving toward control.

Meanwhile, additional specialized machinery—including an Athey Wagon and bulldozers—is being mobilized to support the final stages of the capping process. ONGC said its preparations are progressing steadily and that safety remains the top priority.

Backed by expert personnel, heavy equipment, and local administrative support, ONGC reiterated its full commitment to bringing the incident to a safe and timely resolution.
