Govt assures safety of border residents  

Formal announcement on ‘resolved areas’ on August 15: Paul  

Shillong, June 25: In the wake of the fresh tension along Meghalaya-Assam border following dismantling of a an “illegal” plantation and huts at Tahpat village in West Jaintia Hills district, the state government has assured safety of the border residents by enhancing security measures in the area.

Informing about the deployment of forces by Meghalaya police, cabinet minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh on Wednesday said, “We will intervene and ensure the safety and security of the residents of the affected areas. I will also be meeting the deputy chief minister in-charge Home to get further details.”

Lyngdoh, however, said he could not confirm if the plantation area falls under a disputed territory.

On the government’s ongoing efforts to resolve the border dispute, Lyngdoh said, “As many as five villages have now been covered under what we call resolved areas or areas where differences have been resolved and the formal announcement will be made on Independence Day on August 15.”

“Before we reach August 15, we will maximize attempts to resolve this particular sector as well,” he added.
