Bangladeshi intruder dies after being assaulted by locals in Meghalaya: Police

Shillong, Aug 12 : A Bangladeshi allegedly involved in a cross-border intrusion and abduction bid in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district died after being assaulted by local villagers, police said on Tuesday.

The deceased, identified as Akram from Jenaghati in Sherpur district of Bangladesh, was caught by residents of Kaitha Kona village around 4:30 PM on Monday.

Superintendent of Police Banrap Jyrwa said the villagers handed over the injured man to the police, who was then taken to Maheshkhola Primary Health Centre. He succumbed to his injuries there.

Akram was the sixth person apprehended in connection with a reported attempt to abduct a local from Rongdangai village.

The group of at least eight intruders reportedly vandalised property in the village before being repelled by locals.

One of the arrested men is an armed personnel of the Bangladesh Police.

Items recovered from the accused include a revolver, a Bangladesh Police identity card, three wireless sets and a magazine pouch, Jyrwa said.

Three of the arrested individuals have been produced in court, while two others are under treatment in a hospital.

Joint operations by Meghalaya Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) had earlier led to the arrests in the Khonjoy and Gilagora areas.

The authorities continue search operations to trace the remaining two suspects.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the attempted abduction and the possible cross-border implications involving Bangladeshi law enforcement personnel. (PTI)
