Fight against drugsFive major drug dealers detained in past 1 year

Shillong, Aug 20: In a boost to the state’s fight against drug trafficking, detention orders have been issued to five major drug leaders, most of whom are repeat offenders, in the past one year.

Informing this on Wednesday, social welfare minister Paul Lyngdoh said the detention orders for one year under Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act were approved by a three-member advisory board headed by a retired Chief Justice.

The drug dealers under detention are – Pynhoi Nongtdu alias Pun (35) from Thadlaskein, West Jaintia Hills; Hubert Lamphrang Paliar alias Lungrit (22) from Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills; Marwil Nangbah alias Marwil (49) from Jowai, West Jaintia Hills; Rintu G Saika alias Pratap (35) from Nongrim Hills, Shillong; and Aisha Khatoon alias Pahari (50) from Lower Paltan Bazar, Shillong.

“I am happy to share that from August 2024 till today we have been able to successfully clear the detention orders of five major narcotic dealers most of whom are repeat offenders,” Lyngdoh said.

Meanwhile, the minister said, the government has stepped up efforts to track and control the movement of drug peddlers in the state.

Numerous cases have been unearthed, including a recent seizure of narcotics worth over Rs 4 crore in East Jaintia Hills, which is one of the biggest seizure so far, he said.

Lyngdoh said he would personally hand over cash incentives and certificates to Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) personnel, who braved challenges to track down and capture culprits, at Directorate of ANTF, Golflinks on Thursday.
