Scholarship funds released for over 10,000 ST students

Full scholarship for remaining students to be released by Dec

Shillong, Sep 8: The state government has released Rs 6.17 crore to pay for scholarship of over 10,000 Scheduled Tribe (ST) students pursuing various professional degrees, postgraduate, and doctoral courses.

The amount is the second installment released under the umbrella scheme of Post Matric Scholarship for 2024-25 session.

“The second installment of the Umbrella Scheme of Post Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe (ST) Students for the Academic Year 2024–25 (Fresh and Renewal) has been released to 10,346 selected applicants pursuing Professional Degree, Postgraduate, and Doctoral Courses,” stated an official statement released on Monday.

“An amount of ₹6.17 crore has been disbursed from the unspent balance available, which had remained due to some applicants not linking their Aadhaar with their bank accounts,” it added.

The statement further mentioned that the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs does not release further installments if unspent balances remain in the SNA scholarship account.

After utilising this balance, the Higher and Technical Education Department will now move for release of the second installment from the Government of India.

To cover the scholarships for the remaining 60,226 applicants, the department requires Rs 102.4 crore, according to the statement.

While the ministry releases the amount in two-three installments, the state government, as directed by the Chief Minister, decided to release the entire scholarship amount in one go by sanctioning State funds in advance.

Accordingly, the full scholarship amount for the remaining students will be released by the second week of December 2025, it added.
