ESIC rolls out initiatives to widen social security coverage

Shillong, Oct 7: Two major initiatives were launched by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation during a programme held at the Shillong Club on Tuesday.

The Scheme for Promoting Registration of Employers and Employees (SPREE 2025) and the Amnesty Scheme 2025 aim to strengthen the social security framework in the North East and promote ease of compliance among employers while extending welfare benefits to workers across sectors.

A Dependent Benefit Sanction Memo was handed to Sengmek Marak, spouse of late Pinik A. Sangma, granting her a monthly pension of Rs 13,578 for herself and her children.

Speaking on the occasion, C. Songate, Principal Secretary, Labour Department, Government of Meghalaya, said, “It is vital to bring all eligible employees in Meghalaya under ESIC coverage to ensure their welfare and social protection. The State Government fully supports this endeavour and has given in-principle approval for setting up a 100-bedded ESIC Hospital in Shillong.” He reaffirmed that the Government would extend all cooperation in expanding ESIC benefits to every district of the State.

Pranay Sinha, Insurance Commissioner, North-East and Eastern Zone and Robert L. Guite, Regional Director, ESIC North Eastern Region, highlighted that the initiatives will strengthen compliance, resolve long-pending disputes, reduce litigation and widen social security coverage for the benefit of employers and workers alike.

SPREE 2025, operational from 1 July to 31 December 2025, offers a one-time opportunity for unregistered employers and employees to enroll under the ESI system without penalties or past dues. It simplifies registration through online portals, encourages voluntary compliance and aims to expand social security and healthcare coverage for Meghalaya’s workforce.

The Amnesty Scheme 2025, operational from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026, provides employers and insured persons a platform to resolve pending disputes and settle unpaid dues up to 31 March 2025. It aims to reduce litigation, promote trust and ensure compliance by allowing out-of-court settlements and waiving damages upon payment of dues.

To avail the Amnesty Scheme, eligible applicants must submit the prescribed ESIC form, provide required records and pay pending contributions with interest. After approval by the Regional Director or designated committee, disputes will be treated as settled, helping employers and insured persons regularise their compliance under the ESI Act.
