CM urges media, social media to act responsibly

Shillong, Oct 16: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has cautioned about possibility of law and order being created by misinformation and urged media and social media influencers to act responsibly while sharing news and information.

“I would definitely urge the media as well as the individuals, who have different channels or youtube channels of their own, and who are not certified journalists… I would request that we need to be responsible,” the chief minister said without specifying any particular incident on Thursday.

Sensationalism and unverified information can lead to mob situations, breakdown of law and order, and serious consequences at the grassroots level, he warned.

Pointing out the tendency of getting higher reach even at the risk of unverified information that might “point finger at individuals”, he said such act can lead to a mob situation and law and order breakdown.

“It is absolutely necessary that media, press and individuals involved in social media must act very responsibly…” he said.

“Don’t post news where you don’t have confirmed information because your news or your updates could lead to a very serious situation at the grassroot level,” he added.
