JHADC open to taking govt help, lays down conditions

Shillong, Oct 30: Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council chief Thombor Shiwat said the council is open to receiving help from the government for paying staff salaries, but with certain conditions.

The conditions relate to the council’s desire to manage its own resources, including mines and minor minerals, and transport, which are currently collected by the state government.

“We will accept it (government’s proposal) but with conditions,” Shiwat told reporters after meeting the deputy chief minister in-charge district council affairs (DCA) Prestone Tynsong.

Shiwat however informed that the council is yet to submit its response to the state government. He said the council wants to reduce its dependence on the state government and seeks help in managing its finances.

Regarding the financial implications of the past 5-6 months, Shitwat said that the council is waiting for the state government to calculate the shares due to the council. Once the calculation is done, the council will decide on the next course of action.
