Meghalaya MLA calls for immediate relocation of Harijan families

Shillong, Dec 23: Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator from North Shillong Adelbert Nongrum has reiterated his demand for the prompt relocation of families residing at Them Iew Mawlong, while defending his principled approach to governance and community advocacy.

Speaking to the media, Nongrum emphasized the importance of balancing criticism and commendation of the state government.

“I have only this one thing to say: there is a time that I have to speak in opposition if the present government is doing the wrong thing, and there is a time when I have to praise and laud the government if they are doing good things.”

Regarding the pending relocation issue, he clarified his stance on terminology and his prior conduct during the 2023 election campaign:

“I do not like to use the words ‘Harijan’ or ‘Sweepers’ lane’ as it will only empower such people if we go to the court of law. Therefore, as an MLA, before the conclusion of the 2023 election campaign, I had not gone to seek the support of the families residing at Them Iew Mawlong because I do not want to compromise my principles and elections.”

He underscored his commitment to protecting tribal rights while advocating for humanitarian considerations saying, “You may say Adelbert is anti‑non‑tribal and communal, but the fact remains: if they encroach on our rights, we have to be communal to protect the rights and interests of the people. There is a time we have to speak for our community, and there is also a time that we have to speak about humanity. Peace is collective.”

Nongrum expressed disappointment at being excluded from the high‑level committee addressing the issue but affirmed his continued involvement.

“I assure the people of my constituency that I will not sit or compromise even though the government did not include me as a member of the high‑level committee; I will continue to follow up on the issue.”

He urged the government to expedite the relocation to facilitate development and mitigate health hazards:

“The government should not delay the relocation of families so that it will pave the way for the development of Them Iew Mawlong. We have seen health hazards as one issue—I am talking based on humanitarian grounds—and if any natural calamity strikes, that area being a slum and not a normal residential area, who will take responsibility if any incident takes place in the near future?”

Referencing a court order, Nongrum highlighted the need for executive action.

“The court in its order indicated that they may decide according to the merit of the case. We hope to see the light of the day and that the government will not wait for the court to intervene on any matter. If we depend on the judiciary too much, it only shows that the executive is very weak.”

He expressed confidence in the state’s advisory team to provide the government with effective solutions.

“The Chief Minister has appointed many advisers to the government and its various departments, and I believe these advisers will give effective suggestions to bring change in the state.”
