37 stolen bikes recovered, 19 accused arrested in WJ Hills
Shillong, Jan 18: Even as Meghalaya has witnessed a spurt in theft of two-wheelers, police enforcement has intensified as well, leading to significant recoveries. In West Jaintia Hills alone, 37 stolen vehicles were recovered and 19 accused arrested so far this year.
“There has been a noticeable spate of thefts targeting unattended and poorly secured motorcycles and scooters, not only in West Jaintia Hills but also in other districts of the state,” Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills, said in statement narrating the seizure of two-wheelers in the district.
Three two-wheelers were intercepted by police during a routine naka checking at Lad Demthring on the intervening night of January 16 and 17. The riders, who allegedly breached the checkpoint and ignored repeated signals to stop, abandoned the vehicles after a brief chase and fled into a nearby forest.
A coordinated search operation was launched soon after, resulting in the arrest of one accused, identified as Meshanki Langstang, described by police as a habitual bike lifter. He has been taken into custody and brought to Jowai Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Police data reveal that between January 1, 2025, and the present date, a total of 41 complaints related to stolen two-wheelers have been received in the district, of which 37 cases have been formally registered.
Through sustained enforcement efforts, all 37 stolen vehicles have been successfully recovered and returned to their rightful owners after due verification.
Authorities also confirmed that 19 persons involved in such criminal activities have been arrested, and lawful action is being initiated against them as per existing laws.
Issuing a public advisory, the district police urged citizens to remain vigilant and adopt precautionary measures, including parking vehicles only in secure and well-lit areas, using steering locks and additional security devices such as GPS systems, and avoiding isolated parking spots, especially at night.
The public has also been advised to immediately report any theft or suspicious activity to the nearest police station or by dialling 112.
The West Jaintia Hills District Police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of life and property and appealed to the public for cooperation in maintaining law and order, stating that strict action will be taken against those involved in criminal activities.
