Shillong, Jan 21: A young woman from Meghalaya, who was allegedly coerced into flesh trade, was rescued by Delhi police with the help of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit following an alleged incident of assault on her, according to a statement.
The KSU unit said it acted upon a distress call from her sister about the accused, who allegedly operates a brothel in Delhi, assaulted the woman for refusing to work for him.
“We received a distress call from the woman’s sister, who reported that her sister was being harassed and assaulted by a group of men at her residence. We immediately alerted the SPUNER and the Malviya Nagar police, who reached the location and rescued the woman,” said Marbiang Khongwir, president of KSU Delhi Unit, in the statement.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the woman had come to Delhi seeking employment but was coerced into the flesh trade, the KSU stated.
“The man who had assaulted her happens to be running a brothel. Just because she refused to work, she was assaulted and the man has threatened to kill her,” Khongwir said.
Both the victim and the accused are currently in police custody. The KSU Delhi Unit is working with the authorities to ensure the woman’s safe return to her home state after completing the necessary legal procedures.
“We urge the government to take strict action to prevent such incidents in the future,” she said.
The KSU Delhi Unit also appealed to the public, especially those seeking employment, to be cautious and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
