Ardent Basaiawmoit clarifies on missing House session to pay tributes to Dr Syngkon
Shillong, Feb 20: VPP legislator Adelbert Nongrum, while expressing his grief over the sudden passing away of party colleague and Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, said his passing can change the political mindset in the state for the betterment of the people.
Expressing grief at the demise of Dr Syngkon, Nongrum termed him as a “man of passion and charisma” and a humble politician.
“His passing away is a great loss not only for the family but for the party and the state as a whole,” he said.
Expressing gratitude to the government for showing solidarity, the VPP leader said, “I extend my thanks to the government of the day through the chief minister, deputy chief ministers, and government machinery who visited Roberts Hospital to show their solidarity in this moment of grief.”

Nongrum also expressed the hope that Dr Syngkon’s death would bring change in the political mindset, saying, “I strongly believe that let his death bring change in political mindset so that we can ensure real change in our beloved state.”
Meanwhile, VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit and two other party MLAs – Brightstarwell Marbaniang and Heaving Stone Kharpran – were found absent in the session.
Later, Basaiawmoit, who was preoccupied with funeral arrangements, clarified that they had assumed the House would be adjourned, given the government’s earlier decision.
Stating that the party was shocked by the sudden death, given Dr Syngkon’s good health, Basaiawmoit said, “We knew him as a healthy person. When the news broke out that he fell on the ground and remained unconscious, we were really worried and we were saddened to learn that he could not make it… As a party, we are in grief, we are in shock.”
Basaiawmoit expressed faith that God would fill the void left by Dr Syngkon’s passing.
