Thousands gather in celebration as the first high-ranking representative of the Holy Father visits the region, renewing faith and strengthening the Church.
Tura, March 1: When Pope John Paul II visited Northeast India in 1984—the first papal visit to the region—a sea of humanity flooded Shillong. For many faithful from the Garo Hills, it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Four decades later, history echoed once again—this time in Tura.

For the first time, a high-ranking representative of the Holy Father visited the Garo Hills, marking a spiritually significant and historic chapter for the Diocese of Tura. The Most Reverend Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, arrived on his maiden visit to the region, and the faithful responded with overwhelming joy.
From Mendal town—the gateway to the Garo Hills—where a grand public reception was accorded to him, to the Sacred Heart Shrine in Chandmari and the Cathedral Parish in Tura, thousands lined the streets for hours to greet the Pope’s ambassador. For many, a brief handshake, a blessing, or even a photograph became a cherished memory of a historic day.
Arriving by special helicopter, the Apostolic Nuncio’s presence stirred deep emotion among the crowds, many recalling the 1984 papal visit to Shillong. Though the Pope himself was not present, his personal representative brought with him the closeness and blessings of the Holy See.

A message of faith and prayer from the Apostolic Nuncio
During Holy Mass at the Cathedral Parish in Tura and later at the reception programme at the Sacred Heart Shrine, the Apostolic Nuncio delivered a message rooted in faith, unity, and responsibility.
Greeting civic leaders, clergy, religious, and the faithful with respect and affection, he acknowledged their vital contribution to the spiritual, social, and cultural life of the region. He observed that the large gathering reflected the strong bonds uniting the Church and the people of the Garo Hills—bonds built on faith, mutual trust, and dedicated service.
Referring to Tura as a land blessed with natural beauty, vibrant traditions, and a deep sense of community, he emphasized that above all, the people are blessed with the gift of faith that has taken deep root and borne abundant fruit.

The Nuncio noted that earlier generations had embraced the Gospel with courage and conviction, building churches, schools, and institutions not merely of brick and stone, but of living faith. He urged the faithful to cherish this precious inheritance and pass on an even stronger faith to future generations.
“Prayer is the most powerful weapon for a Christian,” he reminded the gathering, encouraging everyone to speak to God daily and remain steadfast in communion with the Church.

He also candidly addressed the need to strengthen local vocations. While vocations are gradually increasing, he observed that the number of new priests and religious remains insufficient, particularly as many senior priests are aging and each priest now shepherds thousands of faithful. He urged families to encourage their children to respond generously to God’s call, stressing that the future of the Church depends on strong local vocations.
The Apostolic Nuncio also appreciated the cooperation extended by the State Government and acknowledged the presence of committed Catholic lay faithful serving in public life.
In his homily, he conveyed the greetings and blessings of the Holy Father, urging the faithful to remain united, steadfast in faith, and committed to serving society through Christian values.

Chief Minister lauds the Church’s role in society
The historic occasion was further elevated by the presence of Conrad K. Sangma, who personally welcomed the Pope’s ambassador to the Garo Hills.
Speaking on behalf of the people of Garo Hills and Meghalaya, the Chief Minister described the Nuncio as “a simple, humble and approachable person,” noting that he has travelled extensively across India. He shared that while the Nuncio had visited Meghalaya five times earlier—primarily to Shillong—this marked his sixth visit to the state and his first to Garo Hills.
Sangma highlighted the immense contribution of the Catholic Church in Meghalaya, especially in the fields of education, healthcare, and social service—areas that have transformed countless lives across the state.

He added that the Nuncio’s visit had strengthened the faith of the people and reminded everyone to uphold the values taught by Jesus Christ in their daily lives. Expressing gratitude, the Chief Minister thanked the Apostolic Nuncio for taking time out of his demanding schedule to visit Meghalaya and bless the Diocese of Tura.
As both a state guest and a spiritual shepherd, Archbishop Girelli’s visit was at once diplomatic and pastoral—marking a landmark moment for the Diocese of Tura and deepening its bond with the Universal Church and the Holy See.
For the faithful of the Garo Hills, it was more than a ceremonial visit. It was a celebration of faith, a renewal of hope, and a powerful reminder that even in a remote corner of the world, the Church stands united and alive.
