62 MT coal seized in East Janitia Hills

Shillong, Feb 28: The state police continued its drive against illegal coal mining and transport with an estimated 62 MT coal seized in East Jaintia Hills on Friday.

Speaking on the intensified operation by East Jaintia Hills police and other units, Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang said, “Even yesterday… about 62 metric tons of coal estimate was seized.”

Five teams with magistrates, mining and transport officials are raiding the sites (coal mining and dumping) every day, she said.

However, to a query, Nongrang declined to discuss the coal‑mine blast probe, noting the matter is before the court.

“I would not like to comment on that, as it is subjudice… the next hearing is on the March 5,” she said.

Asked about manpower, she acknowledged shortages, pointing to 2,800 recruits who will join next week.

“They would have to still undergo basic training… we are looking at a minimum of 9‑10 months before we can actually deploy them,” the DGP said.
