GSU office attacked in Chibinang plains of Garo Hills

Tura, March 9: A mob of several hundred people have attacked the office of the Garo Students Union at Chibinang market tonight setting it ablaze in what is being seen as retaliation for this morning’s assault on former Phulbari MLA Esmatur Mominin when he came to the Tura DC office to file his nomination for contesting the upcoming GHADC elections.

Chibinang town, lying between Phulbari and Tikrikilla in the plains belt is dominated by the non tribal community and renowned for its pineapple exporting centre. It is part of the area where night curfew has been imposed from today in view of the volatile situation arising from the Tura incident.

West Garo Hills SP Abraham T Sangma told The Meghalayan Express that police forces in the area are making all attempts to enforce the curfew, but acknowledged that mobs are out on the streets and security forces are reigning them in. He said that fire tenders are out trying to contain the blaze on the GSU office.
