One killed as storm lashes parts of Assam

Guwahati, Mar 17: At least one person died and another was injured as a storm lashed large parts of Assam since Monday night, affecting around 8,000 people, according to an official report.

The casualties were reported from Baksa district.

In a report on Tuesday, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that the storm was reported in many parts of the state on Monday night and early this morning.

A total of 577 villages in 23 districts were affected, including Kamrup, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Nagaon, Chirang, Majuli, Lakhimpur, Cachar, Darrang, Dhubri, Golaghat and Tinsukia.

While damage reports were received from 21 districts, it was still awaited from West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts.

More than 8,000 population was affected in the storm, the ASDMA report said.

As many as 111 houses were destroyed and 1,523 partially damaged in the storm, besides damage to electricity supply poles and conductors, elementary and secondary schools, Anganwadi centres, and other infrastructure.

A total of 52 hectares of crop land was also affected in the storm.

The statement further said that rice, dal, salt, mustard oil and tarpaulin sheets have been distributed as relief materials in the affected areas.(PTI)
