Shillong, March 18: The curfew in West Garo Hills has been extended further by another 24 hours from Thursday morning with a relaxation period of 12 hours allowing public movement and normal functioning of offices, banks and schools during the day.
According to the order issued by deputy commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal on Wednesday, the curfew will remain in force till 6 am on 20 March although it will be relaxed from 6 am to 6 pm on Thursday to allow day-to-day activities of the people.
The continuation of stringent preventive measures was necessary after incidents of violence threatened human life, public safety and property, the DC said.
During relaxation hours, institutions will operate normally, but no movement is permitted outside residences at other times, he said.
Police and executive magistrates have been directed to enforce the order, with violations punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he added.
