Ornamental fish resources can create livelihoods: Rymbui

Shillong, March 20: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said Meghalaya’s “untapped” ornamental fish resources can create youth livelihoods and advance the state’s $10 billion‑by‑2028 goal, while warning against environmental damage to rivers and streams.

Speaking at a training workshop on advanced aquascaping organised by ICAR‑CIFE Mumbai with St. Anthony’s College and the state Fisheries Department, Rymbui highlighted species unique to Meghalaya and called for active youth participation.

“This goal requires active participation from all stakeholders, particularly the youth,” he said, linking the effort to India’s 2047 development vision.

He urged the Fisheries Department and colleges to sensitise farmers about protected species and curbs on illegal trade, and pressed students to adopt local rivers for study and conservation.
