Public hearing for 1,605 MW Subansiri Upper project held in Arunachal district

Itanagar, Mar 24 : Arunachal Pradesh minister Nyato Dukam on Tuesday expressed hope that the proposed 1,605 MW Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project will bring transformative benefits to affected families besides contributing to the development of the state and the nation.

Addressing an environmental public hearing at Daporijo in Upper Subansiri district, Dukam appealed to all stakeholders to support the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to ensure the smooth and successful implementation of the project.

Dukam, the state commerce and industry minister, assured that the report submitted by the Subansiri Upper project liaisoning committee would be taken up with the state government for appropriate consideration in the interest of the people, an official communique informed here.

The environmental public hearing for the proposed project was conducted by the Arunachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board as part of the statutory process required for the grant of environmental clearance.

Local MLA Taniya Soki, chairman of the committee Rolen Dagam, district administration officials, NHPC representatives, panchayat members and the public attended the hearing.

During the proceedings, stakeholders expressed their views, concerns and suggestions regarding the project.

Notably, a majority of stakeholders, including affected families, supported the project during the public hearing, officials said.

Meanwhile, project general manager Ratan Sagar reiterated the commitment of the authorities to maximise benefits for local communities.

He said that once completed, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities, create market and supply linkages, support activities under corporate social responsibility (CSR) and contribute to the state’s revenue. (PTI)
