Pressure groups to remember HNLC leader Cherishterfield on Aug 13

SHILLONG, AUG 9: Three pressure groups – Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) – have decided to observe the third death anniversary of former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) general secretary Cherishterfield Thangkhiew on August 13.

Cherishterfield was killed in an encounter with police at Mawlai-Kynton Massar in Shillong on August 13. 2021

“We will organize putting up of black flags as a mark of protest against the killing of Cherishterfield Thangkhiew from 9 am and we will accompany the family members to pay floral tributes to the departed leader at Lawmali cemetery at 2pm,” KSU Mawlai Circle president Biangbor Paliar said in a statement here on Friday.

“We can never forget or accept the excessive use of power by the state authorities and letting those involved go scot-free,” he said while urging all residents of Mawlai and across the Hynniewtrep land to join hands in paying respect to the late leader.
