Tura, Oct 14: Former Meghalaya minister and veteran Congress leader Chamberline B Marak passed away on Wednesday at a hospital in Tura. He was 80. He had been ailing for some time.
Marak was among the last of the old guard of the Congress party from the era of then Chief Minister Late Salseng C Marak in the 1990s. A well-educated man, he was known for his gift for composing poetry and his command of English literature.
He served the state as a senior minister and was elected multiple times from the Bajengdoba constituency in North Garo Hills, which was earlier part of East Garo Hills. His most notable contribution came during his tenure as education minister.
He last successfully contested the state election from Bajengdoba in 2008.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed sadness at the news of his demise. He recalled the close bond Marak shared with his father, the late Purno A Sangma, during their days together in the Congress. Both leaders served the party in various roles during their time in the grand old party of India.
