JSU alleges ‘misconduct’ by postal staff at Jowai

Jowai, April 17: The Jowai circle of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) on Friday met the Chief Postmaster of Jowai Post Office and sought action into public complaints of alleged misconduct by postal staff.

“Citizens have reported instances of disrespectful behavior, rude remarks, and arrogant treatment while sending their parcels, which has caused distress and humiliation to the people of Jaintia Hills,” president of union Born Rupon said.

During the meeting, the Union cited postal regulations.

“Such conduct is a violation of the Post Office Act, 2023 and the Post Office Rules, 2024, which mandate that postal employees must treat customers with respect, handle mail responsibly, and follow proper security protocols without harassment,” he said.

The JSU has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Postmaster, with a copy forwarded to the Superintendent of Post Offices, Shillong Division, seeking immediate corrective measures.

According to the Union, the Chief Postmaster agreed to act on the issue.

“The Chief Postmaster has agreed to take this matter seriously and assured that clear rules and guidelines will be displayed for the public — not only in Hindi and English but also in Khasi and other local languages, so that people from rural and remote areas are not misled or harassed,” Rupon stated.

He said the JSU welcomes this commitment and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

“(However), if corrective measures are not implemented in a timely manner, the Union will be compelled to take further steps to safeguard the rights and dignity of the people of Jaintia Hills,” he warned.
