Tura set for massive urban makeover under ₹1,928-Crore redevelopment push

Shillong, May 12: Tura is set to witness a major urban transformation with infrastructure, tourism, sports, and civic projects worth nearly ₹1,928 crore planned across the town. The ambitious redevelopment initiative was reviewed on Monday during a high-level meeting chaired by Conrad K. Sangma, in the presence of Cabinet Ministers Timothy D. Shira and Sanbor Shullai.

The meeting assessed the progress of ongoing infrastructure and urban development projects while also reviewing upcoming initiatives that will be implemented in phases as part of the ambitious redevelopment plan for Tura town.

Officials reviewed ongoing projects worth more than ₹1,331 crore. Key projects include the Tura Integrated Administrative Complex, estimated at ₹165 crore and expected to be completed in phases beginning September 2027. Other major projects under implementation are the PA Sangma Sports Complex and its West Stand, the Pa Togan Sangma Track & Field Stadium, and the Tura Technology Park.

The review also covered several civic and tourism-related projects, including the beautification of Tura Bazaar, construction of a Convention Centre, the Pelga Tourist Circuits & Hospitality Complex, a Working Women’s Hostel, heliport development, and the Tura Water Supply Scheme.

The redevelopment of the Polo Orchid Hotel is also expected to commence shortly.

In addition, projects worth ₹242.74 crore that are ready for tender were discussed during the meeting. These projects, which will also be implemented in phases, include the redevelopment of Najing Bazaar, construction of a multi-level parking and cinema complex at SMELC, development of Tura City Park, an Active Ageing Centre, a Kids Zone at Araimile, and the Tura Promenade.

Other planned initiatives include the Chief Minister’s Youth Center, renovation of the Circuit House, development of a commercial complex, installation of street lighting, and enhancement of sports facilities at Kendriya Vidyalaya.

Projects currently at the conceptual stage, with an estimated investment of ₹155 crore, include affordable housing, an archery complex, and additional commercial infrastructure.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of timely execution of projects and called for stronger coordination among departments to ensure smooth implementation of the redevelopment Projects.
