Shillong, May 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured that he would soon take up with his Assam counterpart Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma the matter of resumption of second phase of border talks to resolve the remaining six areas of difference.
Replying to media query on Thursday, he said the negotiations would resume following completion of the process of government formation in the neighbouring state where Dr Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term recently.
“The new government is being sworn in Assam. Therefore, let a few days pass. I will communicate with the Assam Chief Minister and we will definitely take the discussion forward very soon,” Sangma said.
The second phase of talks covers six remaining areas of difference between the two states — Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah, Block I & Block II, and Psiar-Khanduli.
The first phase of the border settlement was concluded in March 2022, when both states signed a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to resolve six of the 12 disputed areas.
The agreement covered Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pillangkata, and Ratacherra.
Sangma indicated that his government remains committed to the process. “We will definitely take the discussion forward very soon,” he reiterated.
