Meghalaya to approach Dorbar Shnongs for voter verification drive

Shillong, May 19: East Khasi Hills district has launched preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 election cycle, with authorities announcing a large-scale house-to-house voter verification drive covering more than 1,000 polling stations.

The revision exercise, being carried out under the directions of the Election Commission of India (ECI), places Meghalaya in Phase III of the nationwide electoral roll update programme. District election authorities on Monday briefed representatives of recognised political parties in Shillong on the roadmap, timelines and operational procedures for the exercise.

Officials said East Khasi Hills district currently has 17 Assembly constituencies and 1,021 polling stations.

According to the schedule shared during the meeting, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification of voters from June 30 to July 29, while the draft electoral roll will be published on August 5. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on October 7, 2026.

In a significant move, officials said the 2005 electoral roll will serve as the “Legacy Roll” for reference during the revision process, in line with ECI guidelines.

Political parties were asked to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) for every polling station to ensure transparency and active participation during the revision exercise. The Office of the Deputy Commissioner will write to all the Dorbar Shnongs in the district to apprise them of the Special Intensive Revision exercise and to solicit the support and cooperation of Dorbars in disseminating information to the Electorate on the house visits by the Booth Level Officers and the subsequent hearings to be conducted by the Electoral Registration Officers.

The District Election Officer appealed to political parties, electors and stakeholders to cooperate with the election machinery to ensure an “accurate, inclusive and discrepancy-free” electoral roll.
