Shillong, May 20: The Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem has cautioned vehicle owners against failing to update ownership records after sale, stating that strict enforcement drives are underway and violators will face penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act.
A statement issued by the East Khasi Hills police said “in many instances, the ownership of vehicles is not being officially transferred in the records after the sale or purchase of vehicles.”
“Such practices create difficulties in maintaining accurate vehicle records and fixing accountability in cases involving accidents, traffic violations, or criminal activities,” the SP stated.
The police reminded the public that transfer of ownership is mandatory under Section 50 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
“Both the seller and purchaser are required to ensure that the ownership transfer process is completed within the prescribed time limit before the District Transport Office,” the release said. “Failure to transfer ownership shall result in penalties and action under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act,” it added.
The SP strongly advised all vehicle owners to ensure proper execution of ownership transfer documents at the time of sale/purchase; submit the required forms and fees to the concerned Registering Authority without delay and verify that the Registration Certificate (RC) reflects the updated ownership details.
The statement further noted that “strict enforcement is being carried out regularly through Mobile Courts and Traffic Enforcement drives across the district.”
The police also urged the public for cooperation to maintain accurate vehicle records, ensure accountability, and promote road safety.
