Govt launches vehicle dues settlement scheme

Rs 170-180 crore revenue expected from OTS scheme

Shillong, June 11: The One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme for pending vehicle taxes and fitness penalties for commercial vehicle owners in Meghalaya was launched Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Transport, Sniawbhalang Dhar, on Thursday.

Informing that the system has been made ready for OTS scheme, he said, “From tomorrow, the public can come forward and clear their dues as we announced in the Cabinet meeting.”

Under OTS, the government will waive 80% of Motor Vehicles Tax and Goods Tax dues, and 90% of fitness penalty dues for all commercial vehicles, big and small, irrespective of the year.

“Whatever dues have been there, they can come and clear their dues as per the formula cleared by the government,” Dhar said.

He also informed that the state has about Rs 11,000 crore in pending dues from roughly 65,000 motor vehicles, 12,642 goods/passenger vehicles, and 57,000+ fitness penalties.

After the waiver of over Rs 800 crore, the government expects to recover Rs 170-180 crore.

“It is help for the government, but at the same time it is big relief for vehicle owners,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister urged truck owners and operators to clear dues now to avoid future penalties.

“After they finish this one-time scheme, from the next phase or next quarter, I request them to come regularly, so that there will be no more dues,” he added.
