Meghalaya: Foundation of four new highway projects to be laid on Tuesday

Shillong, Jun 15: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the foundation of four new highway projects will be laid on Tuesday.

He said stretches of two new highways will also be upgraded. The total cost of the six projects is Rs 3,214 crore.

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, will attend the programme.

“Exciting day tomorrow as we lay foundations for 4 new National Highway Projects and upgradation of 2 existing National Highways for Meghalaya with an investment of Rs 3,214 crore at the North East Infrastructure Summit in New Shillong, graced by Hon’ble Union Minister for @MORTHIndia, Shri @nitin_gadkari ji. Join me LIVE as we dedicate the projects to the development of Meghalaya and the prosperity of our people,” Sangma said in a social media post on Monday.

The projects of which foundation would be laid include the 7.76-km Pynursla Bypass on NH-206 worth Rs 564 crore, the Rs 737-crore, 31.5-km-long Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge-Selsella Road on NH-127B, the 31.7-km Selsella-Goeragre Road on NH-206 to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 504 crore and the 29-km, Rs 951 crore Tura Bypass on NH-217.

A 10.67 km stretch of the Shillong-Dawki Road would be improved at a cost of Rs 351 crore, while a 5.44 km stretch of Jowai Bypass would be improved at Rs 106 crore.

The projects are expected to strengthen inter-district and interstate connectivity, improve transport infrastructure and facilitate trade, tourism and economic activities across Meghalaya, officials said. (PTI)
