Jump in PGI score reflects Govt effort: CM

Shillong, July 8: Education reforms take time, but the results are now visible, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Wednesday while expressing happiness over the highest jump recorded by Meghalaya in PGI scores, moving up two categories at one go.

Meghalaya’s score in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2025-26 rose to 525 from 448 last year.

With this, Meghalaya has moved from ‘Akanshi III’ to ‘Akanshi I’, placing it in the same category as 13 other states, including most in the North East.

“I am very happy to share with all of you that just today the PGI ranking and the different numbers have come out. And as you are aware, in the past 3-4 years especially there has been a very specific and very considered effort by the Government of Meghalaya and the Education Department to improve this,” Sangma said.

He said the steady improvement over the last four years reflects the impact of sustained work.

“Earlier we were in the Akanshi III category, which was the lowest category… we are very happy that now we are in the same category as 13 of the states in the Akanshi I category, where we have jumped two levels,” Sangma added.

The Chief Minister said while the jump is significant, the government is not complacent and aims to reach the top ‘Utkrisht’ level.

He stressed that change in education cannot happen overnight.

“Education is a very complicated and very sticky subject, as mentioned before. But the numbers are clearly reflecting that the efforts that we are making are having the desired impact. It is not that we can work magic in one day,” he said.

Replying to a query, the Chief Minister said, “Of course, we are not happy, not satisfied with this simple fact that we are in Akanshi I. We want to reach Utkrisht level, which is the highest level, and that is what we desire. But as I said, all efforts take time.”

He said the state is on the right track and expects further gains in the coming years.

“The point here is that we are in the right direction. The point is that our numbers have gone up by almost 70 points. This is just the beginning. We expect that more impact will happen in the next rankings that take place,” he said.

Sangma also acknowledged the Education department for the achievement.

“I must put on record the tremendous work that has been put in by the Education Minister, and especially our Commissioner & Secretary, Education, Vijay Mantri, and his entire team that have worked really meticulously to be able to achieve this goal,” he said.

“We are hopeful that in the coming years we will be able to further improve the overall marks that we receive in PGI,” the Chief Minister added.
